There is much to see on tailor made holidays to Chile thanks to its diverse weather and landscape - so what are the main highlights of the country?

Chile winds its way along South America's west coast, covering several different climate zones ranging from hot and dry conditions in the north, a more temperate feel in the central region and colder weather towards the south.

These changes in climate mean visitors can put together an itinerary that focuses on Chile's desert, winemaking area, lake districts or mountainous national parks - or even visit destinations in all of these parts of the country.

In the north, travellers can head to the Atacama - the world's driest desert and a region where rainfall has never been recorded in some places - as well as to locations such as Arica, Chile's northernmost town, and Lauca National Park, which is home to both active and dormant volcanoes.

The desert has plenty to offer in the way of stunning scenery, historic sights and villages and hot springs, so you may want to ensure your itinerary includes all of these attractions.

Elsewhere, Chile's Central Valley is a must-visit for fans of the country's wines. The temperate weather in this part of the nation means conditions are perfect for grape-growing. You can take a tour of several different vineyards and sample a range of wines during your stay.

Chile is also well-known for its lake scenery in both the north and south. If your holiday is in the former region, you may want to see Villarrica National Park and bustling Pucon. For southern lake district breaks, Vicente Perez Rosales National Park and Puerto Montt should be visited.

If you do head to Puerto Montt, you will be able to take a ferry to Chiloe Island, which is home to numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites recognised by the organisation for its historic churches.

Other Chilean destinations to visit on tailor made holidays to South America include the remote Easter Island - which you can access via flights from Santiago - along with the forested Quelat National Park and Valparaiso, the second biggest city in the country.

You might also want to consider booking a Patagonian cruise to see the spectacular fjords, rivers and glaciers of the southern region.
